Who writes a better poem, Joel or ChatGPT? You be the judge!

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot launched on November 30, 2022, and promptly gained attention for its detailed and articulate responses spanning various domains of knowledge. A notable drawback has been its tendency to confidently provide information not completely verified. Ever since Bob Ching introduced “Chat” to me, I have been having fun testing it out on various avenues on my computer including asking it to write two articles on the US-China relationships found here and here.

One of the abilities of “Chat” is writing poems. Being a “poet wannabe”, I decided to challenge ChatGPT to a poem writing contest. About a week ago I wrote a piece called US and China Working Together, I used this poem to challenge “Chat” to see if it can write a better version of “my masterpiece”. In less than a couple of minutes, a poem was spilled out. Even though the rhyming was perfect, it didn’t carry words that best capture the essence of my thoughts and evoke the emotions I intended to convey. So I reloaded the first ChatGPT edition and asked it to do a better job. After 12th editions. this is what I got as compared to my original poem.

My original poem on “US and China Working Together“:

Imagine how our world could prosper
If only the US and China would work together,
Instead of bickering and starting wars
Building bridges, prosperity for us all!

America believes and values individualism,
Everyone lives with maximum freedom.
Regardless of their plebeian background,
Equal opportunities to achieve the American Dream.

China treasures millennia of cultural lineage,
Respect for family, hierarchy and heritage.
Emphasis on education, hard work and harmony,
Willingness to trade despite "conflicting" ideologies.

Each system has their own merits
When nothing is taken to its utmost limits.
If both side are willing to learn from each other,
Their own system will only get better.

Imagine how our world could prosper,
When the US and China would finally work together,
Promoting prosperity and good will,
Building bridges to make our world better still!

My pal “Chat’s” version of my original poem:

Imagine a world where the US and China unite,
Setting aside differences, working towards what's right,
No more bickering or starting needless wars,
But building bridges, opening prosperous doors.

In America, individualism reigns supreme,
With freedom cherished as the ultimate dream,
Regardless of background, everyone can strive,
For equal opportunities to make their lives thrive.

China, steeped in rich cultural heritage,
Values family, tradition, and harmony's leverage,
Hard work and education are held in high esteem,
With a focus on progress and fulfilling each dream.

Both systems possess merits worth learning,
By embracing the strengths, bridges we'll be turning,
If each side is willing to listen and grow,
Their own systems will evolve and flourish, we know.

Together, the US and China can shape a bright path,
Promoting prosperity, fostering goodwill that will last,
Building bridges of collaboration and respect,
For the benefit of all, a world we can expect.

Imagine the possibilities of this united endeavor,
A shared vision where we all can forever endeavor,
In harmony and cooperation, we'll find our way,
Towards a future where peace and prosperity hold sway.

Who writes a better poem? You be the judge! Meanwhile this budding poet wannabe is not worried about losing my job to my pal “Chat”.

And oh! I have heard that Chat writes music, since I am also a budding composer, I will test my music poweress with Chat soon!
