As China resumes its historically prominent role in international affairs, American elite fears of decline and loss of global dominance have fostered a New Cold War. This forum explored China’s modern development and examined the current U.S.-China relationship in that context.
This dialogue is held in partnership with the journal “China and the World: Ancient and Modern Silk Road”.
Professor Da Hua Feng’s book China’s Millennium Transformation: The Belt and Road Initiative, is becoming a best seller due to its detailed and timely subject. Professor Steven Pei has spoken often about the deleterious effects of the China Initiative which is scheduled for “sunset” due to real or ‘perceived’ unfair treatment of Chinese Americans and immigrants of Chinese decent. Professor Zhiqun Zhu’s teaching and research interests include Chinese politics, U.S.-Asian relations, and international relations theories. He is the author and editor of a dozen books.
I have previously blogged about Professor Hammond: The West’s Failure to Understand China’s History!
In this forum, Hammond gave a detailed narrative of the recent history between China and the west. He covered the origins of the Opium War which led to the century of humiliation, the period of intervention and subjugation of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China by Western Powers (and Japan) from 1839 to 1949. Hammond also discussed in detail the difference between western and Chinese cultures which may have led to the present geopolitical conflicts and the “cold” war between the two superpowers.
