David Brooks is a conservative political and cultural commentator who writes for The New York Times. He has also worked as a film critic for The Washington Times, a reporter and later op-ed editor for The Wall Street Journal, a senior editor at The Weekly Standard from its inception, a contributing editor at Newsweek, and The Atlantic Monthly, in addition to working as a commentator on NPR and the PBS NewsHour.
He wrote this Opinion piece on the New York Times to postulate that the 2024 presidential primaries could be wild. The following points are the premise of his opinion:
- Americans are deeply dissatisfied with the way things are going. Only 13 percent of voters say the country is on the right track.
- Americans are deeply dissatisfied with the leaders of both parties. Joe Biden has a 33 percent job approval rating among registered voters. About half of Republican voters want to move on from Donald Trump and find a new presidential candidate for 2024.
- Inflation is soaring. Throughout history, inflationary periods have often been linked to political instability.
- The generation turnover is coming. The boomers that now dominate power are bound to retire soon, leaving a vacuum for something new.
- Americans are detaching themselves from the two political parties. Far more Americans consider themselves independents than consider themselves either Democrats or Republicans.
- A majority of American voters believe that our system of government does not work, and 58 percent believe that our democracy needs major reforms or a complete overhaul. Nearly half of young adult voters believe voting does not affect how the government operates.
The article went on to postulate what may happen in the 2024 presidential campaign if these conditions continue to exist and the situation maybe wild.
